The storyThe crayfish of Korana – a mark of excellence
Since the middle of the 19th century, during the summer months, numerous swimmers searched for refreshment in the waters of Korana in Karlovac. During the summer months, the water warms up to 24°C or more. As the old saying goes, “Korana strengthens the power of men and invigorates the beauty of women”. The new baths were built in 1896 on the grounds of Rakov vrt, purchased for this purpose by the city of Karlovac. Rakov vrt (Crayfish garden) received its name from the river crustaceans (crayfish), which dwell in the clean and crystal waters of Korana.
It is no accident that the hotel – today’s Korana –Srakovčić, was built right on top of this water rich with life. Although that same year Rakov vrt was reorganized into a park and renamed Vrbanićev perivoj, after the mayor of Karlovac at the time, crayfish are still a mark of purity and excellence of the waters of Korana.
The name of Rakov Vrt was kept in the name of the city district Rakovica, once a separate settlement, today a city district downstream from hotel Korana-Srakovčić. The successor of excellence is also the hotel itself - between the 19th and 20th centuries it housed dignitaries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and today it welcomes dignitaries from around the world.
